Some Information about Chardonnay Grapes and Winemaking

When it comes to winemaking, there are choices to be made but one of the most essential choices is the choice of the grape that is to be used in the process. If you’re making your first attempt at brewing your own wine then you should think about using white Chardonnay grapes. People may not be familiar with wine terminology but they’ll have heard about Chardonnay one way or the other. In the United States the Chardonnay grape is grown mostly in California and 50% of the grapes grown in California are of this variety. The Chardonnay became the most popular grape in California vineyards because of its fame among winemakers and its cultivation has spread beyond California and over to areas like Washington, Oregon, Long Island and the Niagara Peninsula as well. Although this grape has its failings it tends to be sturdier that most other varieties.

If you’re growing Chardonnay grapes, one of the essential things that you should look out for is when they get to the ripening stage. If they are plucked too late then they will have acid levels which tend to run higher than normal. With grapes you always have to keep a close eye on the acid levels in relation to the sugar levels. If you fail to do this, your efforts in winemaking may not prove to be as pleasant as you want them to be.

The wine that results from Chardonnay grapes can come in different tastes. It all depends on how the wine is made and the flavors that result may range from oak, vanilla, caramel or have the fruity taste of apples, lemons, peaches, pears or melons. For a single category of grape, this is actually a lot of variety. When you are blending this grape along with other types of grapes, it creates a unique taste that any winemaker should find interesting. People tend to prefer to blend the grape along with Chenin Blanc, Semillon or French Columbard.

When it comes to what people who drink wine prefer, you have to deal with a lot of desires. Winemakers are always doing experiments to determine the particular flavor that should be result when it comes to their wine. This is a practice which is common not only with winemakers in the United States but al over the world. One particular practice that is common is the use of oaking in order to influence the taste of the wine. In the 80’s the technique became very popular and a lot of winemakers still use these techniques on a number of grape wines today. Some of the winemakers tried other experiments to achieve similar success but they didn’t achieve results that were as successful as the oaking method.

Because of the level of success that has been achieved with the growth of Chardonnay grapes, they have become so popular on a global scale. They have adjusted to the changes that come with the climate and as such they can be cultivated almost anywhere in the world. If you want to use these sorts of grapes for your winemaking, you should try and learn as much as you can about them so you can brew your wine successfully.
